UK Government Launches US$ 17.6 Billion Energy Efficiency Scheme for Low Income Households
UK Government Schemes

UK: The UK Government has introduced a new national programme aimed at improving home energy efficiency for lower-income households, with total funding of US$ 17.6 billion. The initiative targets families with an annual household income of around US$41,000 or less and focuses on providing access to energy efficiency upgrades such as solar panels, heat pumps, insulation, and smart energy controls. The scheme replaces earlier fragmented approaches, including the Energy Company Obligation programme, and includes US$ 5.8 billion in direct public investment for home improvements across social housing and low income owner-occupied homes.

The plan includes free solar panel grants valued at around US$ 11,700 and is expected to help households save up to US$ 645 per year when switching to heat pumps supported by solar power. The government also plans to roll out communal heat networks in social housing to reduce heating costs through shared systems. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband stated that the initiative aims to address cost of living pressures while supporting cleaner energy use. Concerns were raised by Andrew Bowie regarding potential long-term electricity costs, while Independent Age highlighted the health risks associated with cold homes for older and vulnerable residents.
