UK: Temperatures across the United Kingdom are forecast to fall below freezing next week, marking a cold start to 2026 following a mild December. British Gas estimates that around 54,000 households may require assistance with heating and hot water systems during the cold period. The company noted that freezing conditions increase the risk of pipes freezing, which can disrupt heating and water supply. During the previous winter, around 1.2 million customers contacted engineers to address boiler faults and restore heating and hot water.
British Gas advised households to take preventive measures as frozen pipes remain a common cause of winter breakdowns. Uninsulated pipes can freeze when temperatures drop below zero, leading to pressure build-up and potential leaks when ice thaws. Households are advised to identify frozen sections, thaw pipes safely using warm water, reset boilers once pipes are clear, and shut off the water supply if a burst pipe is suspected. The company stated that prompt action can limit disruption and damage during periods of extreme cold.
