Indonesia: Heat Pumps Highlighted In Industrial Decarbonisation Efforts
Indonesia: Indonesia is advancing efforts to reduce emissions from its industrial sector, with the Ministry of Industry setting a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, ahead of the national target of 2060. The manufacturing sector accounts for around 19.07 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product and remains a major consumer of energy, particularly for process heat. Heating requirements account for up to 45 per cent of industrial energy use, with a significant share still met through fossil fuel-based systems, especially in higher temperature applications.
Heat pumps are being identified as a potential technology to support emissions reduction in low- to medium-temperature industrial processes, particularly below 200 degrees Celsius. These systems use electricity to transfer heat and can deliver three to four units of heat for each unit of electricity consumed. Estimates indicate that heat pumps could reduce energy consumption by 30 to 50 per cent, with mitigation costs ranging from USD 49 to USD 160 (EUR 45 to EUR 147) per tonne of carbon dioxide, depending on the application. Adoption in Indonesia remains limited due to existing reliance on conventional boilers, infrastructure requirements and investment considerations, although the technology is being considered for broader deployment in industrial applications.
