USA: The Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) has launched Power Ahead Colorado, a major initiative backed by a US$199.7 million federal grant to reduce carbon emissions from home heating and cooling. Funded through the US Environmental Protection Agency, the programme focuses on accelerating the adoption of electric heat pumps across the Denver metro area.
Around US$40 million will be allocated to heat pump rebates, alongside no-cost upgrades for low-income households, homeowner advisory services and public awareness campaigns. Additional funding will support workforce training, with plans to train more than 4,800 workers, and help local authorities implement building codes that reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Buildings account for more than half of regional greenhouse gas emissions, making them a critical target for climate action. By combining financial incentives, skills development and education, the programme aims to cut emissions, lower energy bills and create well-paid local jobs.
