U.S.: A coalition of 34 organizations has urged the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to extend the compliance deadline and reverse Biden-era efficiency rules for natural gas furnaces and commercial water heaters, citing concerns over higher costs and reduced consumer choice. Supported by the American Gas Association, American Public Gas Association and National Propane Gas Association, the group warned that the rules would disproportionately affect senior-only, low-income and mobile home households, as well as small businesses. Non-condensing furnaces, which account for approximately 55% of the U.S. natural gas furnace market, would become illegal to manufacture in 2028 under the current rule. According to DOE data, the regulations would increase costs for 30% of senior-only households, 26% of low-income households and 27% of small business consumers, while 39% of households with mobile home gas furnaces would be negatively affected, with the coalition arguing that these impacts may be significantly underreported.
