India: Adani Energy Solutions (AESL), the power transmission arm of the Adani Group, is expanding its district cooling services (DCS) business. The company has been developing DCS facilities over recent years and is now setting up large-scale systems across industrial, commercial, residential, and mixed-use projects. District cooling services provide centralised chilled water to multiple buildings through a network of pipes, offering energy efficiency and cost savings compared to individual cooling systems. AESL operates this business through its subsidiary, Adani Cooling Solutions (ASCL), alongside its other services in transmission, distribution, and smart metering. AESL follows a cooling-as-a-service (CaaS) model, where it finances and operates the entire project, with users paying based on usage, thus alleviating the upfront investment burden for real estate developers.
AESL has partnered with the Maharashtra government’s Mahatma Phule Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Technology (MAHAPREIT) to develop district cooling systems in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and other areas under MAHAPREIT's jurisdiction. This partnership will integrate DCS into the master plans for new developments in the region, with large-scale units planned for areas such as Mira Bhayandar, Thane, Mulund, and the Bharat Diamond Bourse. DCS is expected to reduce cooling costs by 30-35% for residential users and 20-25% for commercial users. The Indian cooling market is anticipated to grow significantly, with per capita cooling energy consumption in India expected to increase in line with rising air conditioning penetration.
