INDIA: India’s room air-conditioner (RAC) market continues to experience strong growth, supported by rising temperatures, rapid urbanisation, higher disposable incomes, and increasing adoption in tier 2 and tier 3 cities. Industry projections indicate that India’s air-cooling and air-conditioning market is expected to expand at a CAGR of approximately 15–18% in the coming years. Despite this momentum, AC penetration in the country remains relatively low at around 8%, highlighting substantial untapped potential. Against this backdrop, market leader Voltas Limited held a 16% share of the RAC market as of March.
According to Jayant Balan, Head of room air conditioning business, Voltas, India remains a highly underpenetrated market, with nearly 70% of consumers still purchasing air conditioners for the first time. While premiumisation is gaining traction, the entry-level segment continues to play an important role in market growth. At the same time, energy efficiency remains a key consideration for Indian consumers across income groups, given concerns around electricity costs. To address this, Voltas has introduced systems offering real-time energy consumption insights to help users optimise power usage. The company is also focusing on adaptive cooling technologies, using algorithms based on regional weather patterns and user behaviour to personalise settings automatically. AI-enabled products, particularly within the Vertis AI range, have witnessed strong demand, reflecting growing consumer interest in smart and energy-efficient cooling solutions.
