With Over 63,000 Per Capita Heat Pump Installations, Vermont Leads New England
According to Efficiency Vermont, the country's first energy efficiency utility, more than 63,000 heat pumps were installed by the end of 2023 as Vermonters embrace heat pumps for cooling and heating their homes and businesses. With 97 heat pumps installed for every 1,000 residents, Vermonters have installed more heat pumps per capita than any other state in the New England region of the USA. Efficiency Maine reports that although Maine has installed more than twice as many heat pumps as Vermont overall (131,000), it lags behind in terms of per capita rate, with 94 heat pumps per 1,000 people. In contrast, Massachusetts, a state with a population of 7 million, has installed less than 30,000 heat pumps, meaning that there are only roughly 4 heat pumps installed for every 1,000 residents.
