Taiwan Expands Energy-Efficient Equipment Subsidy Programme for Businesses

Taiwan: The Ministry of Economic Affairs in Taiwan has opened applications for its commercial energy-efficient equipment subsidy programme, running until May 31. The initiative includes two categories: the "equipment replacement subsidy" and the "energy system replacement subsidy." The first provides a 50% subsidy on energy-saving appliances, capped at NTD 500,000 (USD 16,000), while the latter supports businesses with an electricity capacity of 100 kWh or more, covering one-third of costs for plans achieving a 10% energy savings rate, with a maximum subsidy of NTD 5 million. The ministry encourages high-consumption businesses to work with energy service companies, while smaller businesses can apply for equipment replacement subsidies.

From 2023 to 2024, the programme helped over 36,000 businesses replace more than 60,000 air conditioners and 350,000 light fixtures, saving 400 million kWh of electricity annually and reducing carbon emissions by 200,000 tonnes. Additionally, a subsidy for replacing old home appliances led to 3.22 million units being replaced, with a continued target of replacing another 2.07 million units this year. Taiwan saved 4.8 billion kWh of electricity in 2024, exceeding its 4.5 billion kWh target, and now aims for 5.5 billion kWh savings this year, with a long-term goal of 20.6 billion kWh by 2027.
