AUSTRALIA: Victorian solar and plumbing contractors are set to benefit from a policy update that increases rebates for Australian-made heat pump hot water systems. Starting 1 July 2025, households installing eligible local systems will receive a $1,400 (US$ 910) rebate, $400 (US$ 260) more than for imported units, under the state’s Solar Homes program.

The change is part of a $29.7 million (US$ 19.2 m) initiative in the 2025/26 state budget to promote energy-efficient electric appliances. Heat pump systems, which can cut household energy use by up to 30%, have already seen a 151% rise in installations under the scheme.

Industry consultations are underway to define “Australian made” criteria. The move is expected to boost demand for local products and create new opportunities for contractors aligned with domestic manufacturers.

The policy supports both Victoria’s clean energy goals and its $39.2 billion (US$ 25.4 b) manufacturing sector, which employs over 275,000 people.
