UK: The UK government has announced plans to mandate solar panels on most new-build homes as part of its forthcoming Future Homes Standard, set for release in autumn 2025. The move is expected to help homeowners save up to £530 ($719) annually on energy bills, based on current price caps.
The new regulations aim to reduce living costs for young families and first-time buyers while strengthening national energy security. In addition to solar panels, the standard will require low-carbon heating solutions, such as heat pumps and heat networks, and higher energy efficiency standards.
Aligned with the Prime Minister’s Plan for Change to build 1.5 million homes, the policy promotes the shift to clean, locally produced energy. Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook emphasized the government's commitment to cutting bills through renewable technologies.
Data from Octopus Energy shows 34% of potential heat pump adopters are deterred by planning hurdles, a challenge the new measures aim to address. Applications for the boiler upgrade scheme jumped 73% in early 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, signaling rising interest in green energy.
