Philippines Directs Government Offices to Strengthen Energy-Saving Measures

Philippines: The Philippine government has instructed public agencies to strengthen energy efficiency measures in response to global developments affecting energy supply. The Department of Energy, through the Inter-Agency Energy Efficiency and Conservation Committee, directed all government offices to follow the Government Energy Management Program and implement measures aimed at achieving at least 10% reductions in energy consumption. These steps include maintaining air-conditioning thermostat settings at no lower than 24 degrees Celsius, activating sleep settings on office equipment, switching off lighting and computers when not in use, and adopting flexible work arrangements where applicable.

Government offices have also been advised to replace lighting systems with LED technology, use inverter air-conditioning units and appliances with higher energy efficiency ratings, and consider the use of on-site renewable energy sources such as solar photovoltaic systems. Agencies must designate energy efficiency officers and submit monthly reports on electricity and fuel consumption, including inventories of energy-using equipment. The Department of Energy stated that compliance will be monitored through reporting systems and random inspections conducted by energy audit teams.
