UK Homeowners Could Face US$188 Surcharge on Replacement Gas Boilers

UK: UK homeowners replacing a faulty heating system could face an additional charge of up to £140 (approximately US$188) on a standard gas boiler, as the government considers tightening heat pump sales requirements under the Clean Heat Market Mechanism (CHMM). The proposed changes could increase the mandated heat pump sales quota for heating manufacturers from 8% to 18% of their total boiler sales, raising compliance costs for companies that fail to meet the targets.
Currently, manufacturers are estimated to add around £100 (approximately US$134) to conventional boiler prices to cover compliance-related costs. Under the proposed changes, this surcharge could rise to £140 (approximately US$188) per unit. The CHMM imposes a £500 penalty (approximately US$670) for each heat pump that manufacturers fall short of their required sales targets.
