UK Construction Activity Continues Decline in February

UK: Britain’s construction sector recorded its fourteenth consecutive month of contraction in February, according to the latest S&P Global UK Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI). The index declined to 44.5 in February from 46.4 in January, remaining below the 50 level that indicates expansion. The reading was also below economists’ expectations of 47.0. Survey data indicated that residential construction activity remained the main contributor to the decline, with the housing subindex falling to 37.0 from 39.3 in January.

The survey reported weaker order books linked to subdued market conditions, weather disruptions and rising cost pressures. Commercial construction and civil engineering activity also declined during the month. The continued contraction contrasts with the government’s target to build 1.5 million homes during the current parliamentary term. Construction accounted for more than 6% of the United Kingdom’s economic output in 2025, while broader economic indicators showed stronger performance in the services sector, with the all-sector PMI standing at 52.9 in February.
