U.S.: ASHRAE, in collaboration with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), has released the AI Data Center Energy Performance Framework, providing industry-wide guidance for next-generation data center design and operation. Announced on June 11, 2026, the framework offers practical strategies for both new and existing facilities across their full lifecycle, focusing on thermal management, integrated system performance, energy and water use, and facility reliability under varying climates, load densities and operating conditions. According to the Pew Research Center, the U.S. currently has more than 3,000 operational data centers, with an additional 1,500 facilities in various stages of development. ASHRAE contributed expertise on HVAC systems and overall facility performance, NEMA provided guidance on electrical systems and safety, and PNNL coordinated the working group, with the online resource designed to be continuously updated to address the rapidly evolving AI and high-performance computing landscape.
