Australia: The South Australian and federal governments have announced a joint housing programme valued at AUD 800 million (USD 530 million, EUR 490 million), which aims to deliver around 17,000 new homes across the state. Of this total, close to 7,000 homes are intended for first-home buyers. The initiative forms part of a wider federal commitment to increase housing supply nationally and includes a focus on accelerating construction timelines. The federal government will provide loan funding of AUD 534 million (USD 354 million, EUR 327 million), including AUD 300 million (USD 199 million, EUR 184 million) for water infrastructure in Adelaide’s northern suburbs and AUD 184 million (USD 122 million, EUR 113 million) for urban renewal housing projects.
The South Australian government will contribute AUD 134 million (USD 89 million, EUR 82 million) to support the delivery of 750 homes for first-home buyers. Industry groups have noted that infrastructure delivery and workforce availability will be key factors in meeting construction targets, with continued pressure from labour shortages and material supply constraints. The programme has been positioned as a potential model for similar housing partnerships in other states, with further outcomes expected to depend on the speed of infrastructure rollout and construction capacity.
