Australia: Authorities have warned that southeast Australia is facing its most severe heatwave in six years, with maximum temperatures widely forecast to exceed 40°C. Severe heatwave warnings have been issued for parts of South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania, as well as the entire Australian Capital Territory, driven by a hot air mass moving east across the country. Forecasts indicate that temperatures are expected to reach 41°C in Melbourne and Adelaide, while Canberra is likely to record maximum temperatures above 35°C for four consecutive days from Wednesday. Sydney is also forecast to experience four straight days with temperatures exceeding 30°C. In parts of Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales, temperatures are expected to be as much as 16°C above average, marking the most significant heatwave in the region since the summer of 2019–20. Authorities cautioned that severe heatwaves pose serious health risks, particularly for older people, infants, pregnant women and those with existing medical conditions, and advised residents to stay cool and use fans or air conditioners where available.
