Quebec Introduces New Six-Year Warranty Requirements for Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps

CANADA: On October 5, 2026, amendments to Quebec’s Consumer Protection Act and its associated regulations came into effect, introducing a six-year statutory Warranty of Good Working Order (WGWO) for new air conditioners and heat pumps sold or leased to consumers under long-term contracts entered into on or after that date. Established under Bill 29, the new requirements have implications for manufacturers, wholesalers, and contractors serving Quebec’s residential HVACR market.
The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) has held discussions with representatives of Quebec’s Office de la protection du consommateur (OPC) to clarify how the requirements apply to installed HVAC systems. According to HRAI, several implementation issues remain unresolved, and the association will continue engaging with the authorities to obtain further clarification for industry stakeholders.
