Netherlands' Largest Heat Pump Now Operational, Heating 20,000 Households
Netherlands: Eneco and water authority HDSR have opened the country’s largest heat pump in Utrecht. The pump will extract heat from treated waste water at HDSR’s plant, supplying sustainable heating to approximately 20,000 households in Utrecht and Nieuwegein. This aquathermal system draws residual heat from 65 million litres of treated water daily, raising its temperature to 75 degrees to feed into the heating grid. The project, part of the cities' climate-neutral goals, will reduce CO2 emissions by 30,000 tonnes annually. HDSR’s Nanda van Zoelen and Eneco’s Karen de Lathouder praised the initiative for promoting circular energy use.
