Malaysia: National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health executive director Datuk Ayop Salleh said recent incidents involving gas leaks and explosions have highlighted the need for improved training and stronger risk management practices to prevent similar occurrences. He stated that all parties should treat such incidents with seriousness, referring to cases involving gas exposure, including an ammonia gas leak at the Seremban Toll Plaza and an air-conditioning system explosion at HELP University in Bukit Damansara.
He added that activities involving gas and chemicals require a comprehensive preventive approach. According to him, this should include proper risk assessment, engineering controls, clearly defined safe working procedures, adequate worker competence and effective emergency preparedness to reduce the likelihood of accidents and associated risks.
