UK: Lidl GB has announced plans to open 19 new stores in just eight weeks as part of its ongoing expansion across the UK. Alongside this growth, the discounter is investing over £43 million (US$ 57.7 million) to modernise more than 70 existing stores, bringing enhanced value, choice, and employment opportunities to communities nationwide.
The rapid store rollout, equivalent to one opening every other day, is expected to create up to 640 new jobs. The new locations will extend Lidl’s presence into areas including Calne, Wiltshire, and Brough, Yorkshire. Shoppers visiting the new stores on opening days can enjoy complimentary food samples and special prizes.
This expansion reinforces Lidl’s position as the UK’s fastest-growing bricks-and-mortar retailer, reaching over 60% of British households and contributing £14.5 billion (US$19.4 billion) in Gross Value Added (GVA) to the UK economy in FY24.
The modernisation programme, spanning stores from Dundee to the Isle of Wight, will upgrade customer experience with features such as new tills, larger freezers, and a wider product range. The investment also incorporates energy-saving technologies including chillers with natural refrigerants and smart lighting systems, reducing electricity use and supporting Lidl GB’s Net Zero ambitions.
