Bangladesh: The latest United Nations report on inflation makes the situation clear: Bangladesh is grappling with the most severe inflation crisis in South Asia. Among seven regional countries, Bangladesh records the highest inflation at 8.9 percent in 2025, far exceeding neighbouring India at 2.7 percent and Sri Lanka at 0.6 percent.
Even more concerning, the outlook offers little relief. The UN forecasts inflation in Bangladesh to remain at 7.1 percent in 2026, still the highest in the region. While surrounding economies are stabilizing, Bangladesh continues to sink deeper into a cost-of-living crisis.
The impact is widespread, teachers, salaried employees, day labourers, rickshaw pullers, and small traders are all struggling to keep up with rising prices. Middle-class families are cutting back on living standards, while low-income households are barely managing three meals a day. Inflation has effectively become a relentless, invisible tax on survival.
