Italy: Italian companies are set to lose millions of euros following the European Union’s renewed ban on selling sanitary ware, including toilets and bidets, to Russia as part of its 19th sanctions package adopted last week. The restriction, first introduced in 2022, has been extended and criticised by business representatives as damaging to Italian industry. The ban on sanitary ware exports alone is estimated to cost the Italian economy around 140 million euros ($163 million), while total losses from the new sanctions package are expected to reach 250 million euros ($291 million). Industry sources warned that although the measure may appear minor, it carries serious financial implications for affected firms.
Russian officials mocked the EU decision, saying it “will cost them dearly” and suggesting that the EU will need Russian toilets if current policies continue. The EU expanded sanctions shortly after plans for a US–Russia in-person summit was postponed indefinitely. Russian authorities maintain that the measures have strengthened the national economy by forcing adaptation and the rearrangement of supply chains.
