India Replaces NBC 2016 with NBC 2026

India: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has officially notified the National Building Construction Standards 2026 (SP 7: 2026), replacing the National Building Code of India 2016 with immediate effect from 30 April 2026. The updated standards were introduced under Rule 15(1) of the BIS Rules, 2018, and are intended to revise India’s regulatory framework for building design, construction practices, safety standards and valuation parameters. The revised framework is expected to include updated provisions related to structural safety, sustainable construction, digital technologies in building planning, and revised norms affecting cost estimation and valuation practices.

According to the notification, NBC 2016 has been withdrawn without a transition period, requiring stakeholders to adopt the new standards immediately. The changes are expected to affect engineers, architects, valuers and urban planners, particularly in areas related to project assessment, compliance frameworks and valuation models. BIS has also made the new standards available for online purchase and download, while industry organisations are expected to conduct training and awareness programmes to support implementation.
