HVAC Industry Responds to Growing Scrutiny Over Data Centre Expansion

Global: Growing investment in data centres is creating new opportunities for the HVAC industry while also increasing public scrutiny over energy consumption, water use, electricity costs and noise. According to McKinsey & Company, global data centre infrastructure investment could reach USD 6.7 trillion (EUR 5.8 trillion) by 2030. At the same time, industry sources noted that local opposition has intensified, with several projects facing delays or cancellations due to environmental and community concerns. In response, HVAC manufacturers are focusing on improving transparency and developing technologies that reduce the environmental impact of cooling systems.

Manufacturers are introducing solutions including closed-loop and liquid cooling systems to reduce water consumption, purpose-built cooling equipment to improve energy efficiency, and quieter technologies such as magnetic-bearing chillers and variable-speed fan systems. Industry participants also highlighted the importance of adaptable system designs, lifecycle environmental assessments and closer collaboration with contractors to support long-term performance. They noted that improving public understanding of data centre technologies and their economic benefits, including local employment opportunities, will remain important as demand for AI-driven data centres continues to grow.
