HVAC Costs Climb in the US: New Refrigerants and Supply Chain Issues Drive Price Hikes
US: The cost of HVAC equipment has risen significantly due to increased raw material prices, supply chain disruptions, higher demand, and labour shortages. New environmental regulations, such as the introduction of mildly flammable (A2L) equipment under the AIM Act, are also driving costs up. Martin Hoover, co-owner of Empire Heating & Air Conditioning in Atlanta, noted that since 2020, HVAC system prices have nearly doubled, from just over 6,000 USD to around 12,000 USD. He further added that part of that increase has been the equipment pricing among other major issues such as rising costs for refrigerants, installation materials, insurance, and labour. Manufacturers like Lennox and Carrier anticipate further price increases for new A2L units and remaining R-410A systems, with Lennox CEO Alok Maskara and Carrier CEO David Gitlin confirming projected hikes of 10% to 20% over two years. The transition to A2L refrigerants and related components will keep pushing prices up, affecting both homeowners and contractors.
