Heatwave Drives Surge in Air Conditioning Demand Across the Netherlands
Netherlands: Demand for residential air conditioning systems has increased across the Netherlands following a period of extreme heat, with industry association Techniek Nederland reporting that some installation companies have experienced up to a fourfold increase in customer enquiries. While manufacturers continue to have sufficient product availability, installation capacity has become constrained, with some companies indicating that new installations may not be completed until September due to fully booked schedules.
The heatwave has also contributed to higher electricity demand, with increased use of air conditioners and other cooling appliances during peak evening hours driving electricity prices for customers on dynamic tariffs above EUR 0.80 (USD 0.94) per kilowatt-hour. Industry representatives noted that demand is also being supported by homeowners preparing for the planned end of the Dutch net metering scheme in January 2027, with air-to-air heat pumps allowing greater use of self-generated solar electricity for cooling.
