Heat Pumps Gain Ground in South Korea as Subsidies Drive Residential Adoption

SOUTH KOREA: South Korea’s residential heating market is undergoing a significant transition as heat pumps increasingly challenge traditional gas boilers. Supported by government electrification policies and generous subsidies covering up to 70% of installation costs, heat pumps are becoming more affordable for households. Major manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and KD Navien are expanding their residential offerings, leveraging advances in efficiency and low-carbon heating technology. Heat pumps can generate four to five times more heat energy than the electricity they consume while eliminating direct emissions from fossil-fuel combustion.

The market is expected to benefit from growing global demand for energy-efficient heating solutions and stricter carbon-reduction policies. South Korea aims to install 3.5 million heat pumps by 2035, targeting substantial greenhouse-gas reductions and lower household heating costs. While high upfront installation expenses remain a challenge, industry participants expect economies of scale and wider adoption to reduce costs over time, accelerating heat pump penetration in new homes and rural residential markets.
