UNITED KINGDOM: Dekiln Limited has secured approximately US$3.8 million in funding from the Royal Academy of Engineering to scale up its low-carbon, kiln-free tile manufacturing technology to industrial production. The funding coincides with Dekiln Chief Executive Dr. Aled Roberts being named among the inaugural Green Future Fellows, a programme designed to support engineers developing solutions that cut emissions and improve resource efficiency. Dekiln plans to deploy the funding to establish a pilot manufacturing facility capable of producing up to 1,000 m² of tiles per day, working in collaboration with UK-based industrial partners.
The company’s technology produces ceramic-like tiles using plant-based binders and waste mineral powders, removing the need for energy-intensive kilns typically used in ceramic manufacturing. Dekiln states that its tiles deliver a 94 % lower carbon footprint than conventional alternatives and contain more than 95 % recycled content. Frontier IP Group Plc, which owns a 24.8 % stake in Dekiln, noted that the company raised about $880,000 at a US$3.4 million valuation in September 2024 in an equity round led by Green Angel Ventures. Since then, Dekiln has completed its first commercial installation and moved to larger premises. The Green Future Fellowship programme, backed by around US$190.5 million from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, awarded roughly US$49.5 million to 13 fellows in its first round.
