High-Efficiency and Low-NOx Heating Systems

USA: Starting in 2026, all manufactured water heaters and furnace units installed in Colorado must meet high efficiency standards or ultra-low nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission ratings, aimed at reducing air pollution, improving air quality, and potentially lowering utility bills. Low NOx equipment significantly cuts harmful emissions by drawing combustion air from outside, making it safer for indoor use. While the law does not require residents to replace existing systems, any new purchase must comply with the updated standards. Installation costs for compliant models are estimated at USD 7,000–10,000, compared to around USD 5,000 for older, non-compliant units. However, a limited exemption allows previously manufactured, unsold non-compliant models already in distributor inventory to be installed if sold within a specified timeframe. Once this existing stock is exhausted, standard non-compliant equipment will no longer be available for installation in the state.
