UK: The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) has launched a new technical guide titled “An Introduction to Low-Temperature Hydronic Heating Systems” to support the industry’s shift toward lower-temperature, more energy-efficient heating solutions following updates to Building Regulations Part L. The guide provides step-by-step guidance on designing hydronic heating systems operating at 55°C and below, including 45°C for heat pump installations in newbuild properties. It covers key areas such as heat loss calculations, system and pipework design, domestic hot water systems, and relevant British Standards and reference information. Since 2022, Building Regulations Part L: Conservation of Fuel and Power has required heating systems in both newbuilds and refurbishments to operate at flow temperatures of ≤55°C, and ≤45°C where heat pumps are specified in newbuild dwellings, making low temperature heating the default design approach.

The guide also aligns with CIPHE’s Level 3 Diploma in Low Temperature Heating Systems and complements its sister publication, “Low-Temperature Heating and Hot Water Qualification Guide”, together providing a clear learning pathway for industry professionals. CIPHE said the guide has been developed to help engineers navigate regulatory requirements while ensuring efficient system design and compliance as low-temperature systems become standard. The publication is available to both members and non-members, with an exclusive 20% introductory discount offered until 31 January.
