Cabinet Approves PMAY-U 2.0 to Build 10 million Urban Homes in India
India: The Union Cabinet has approved the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) 2.0 scheme, aiming to construct 1 crore houses with a focus on equity among different segments of the population. The scheme provides financial support to middle-class and impoverished urban families for building, buying, or renting affordable homes. Special attention will be given to marginalized groups, including slum dwellers, SC/STs, minorities, widows, persons with disabilities, and other underprivileged sections. Eligibility for the scheme includes families from the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Low Income Group (LIG), and Middle-Income Group (MIG) segments, who do not own a pucca house anywhere in the country.
The scheme will address affordable housing requirements through three verticals: Beneficiary-Led Construction (BLC), Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP), and Affordable Rental Housing (ARH). The Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS) offers up to a 4% interest subsidy on loans up to ₹25 lakh (30,000 USD approximately), with eligible beneficiaries receiving a maximum subsidy of ₹1.80 lakh (2100 USD), paid in five-year instalments.
