BANGLADESH: The Bangladesh Ceramic Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BCMEA) has called on the government to ensure a stable gas supply for the ceramic industry and eliminate supplementary duties on ceramic tiles and sanitary products. Speaking at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity today, industry leaders warned that further gas price hikes and supply disruptions threaten the sector’s survival.

The industry has grown significantly, with over 80 factories producing tableware, tiles, and sanitary ware, generating $288 million in annual revenue and employing more than 500,000 people. However, severe gas shortages are causing daily losses exceeding $1.6 million. Gas pressure has dropped sharply in key industrial zones, including Mirpur, Savar, Rupganj, and Kashimpur, disrupting production.

BCMEA cautioned that the proposed 152% gas price increase would drive up production costs by 30-35%, undermining the competitiveness of local products in global markets. The association also urged the government to remove the 15% supplementary duty on tiles and the 10% duty on sanitary ware, emphasizing that these are essential goods rather than luxury items.

Acting President Moynul Islam stressed the need for uninterrupted gas supply and supportive policies to sustain industry growth and protect jobs.
