Bangladesh’s Ceramic Industry Faces Sharp Decline Amid Real Estate Slow down

Bangladesh: Bangladesh’s ceramic industry is experiencing its deepest downturn in over a decade, with demand for tiles and sanitaryware falling by up to 30 per cent. Industry representatives attribute the decline to stagnation in the real estate sector, the suspension of government development projects, and reduced credit availability caused by a liquidity crunch in the banking system. According to the Bangladesh Ceramic Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BCMEA), the country’s 62 ceramic producers, including 11 tableware, 12 sanitaryware and 39 tile manufacturers, collectively meet over 87 per cent of domestic demand. However, production has been disrupted by rising energy costs, inflation and currency depreciation, leading to intense price competition as companies attempt to sustain sales.

Manufacturers report operating below capacity, with major firms scaling back production by up to 30 per cent. Tile producers have been hit hardest, while sanitaryware demand has also weakened due to a freeze in government procurement. Industry executives warn that smaller firms face significant risks of closure without access to new financing or market recovery. They suggest that a rebound will depend on political stability and the resumption of public infrastructure spending following upcoming elections.
