India: Manufacturers and dealers of room air-conditioners in India have started pre-booking units at reduced prices following the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate revision that comes into effect next week. Companies said they are passing on the full 10 per cent GST reduction to customers, which will lower prices by up to INR 4,000 (USD 48 / EUR 44) per unit, depending on the model.
The GST Council, chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, recently approved a shift from four tax slabs to a two-rate structure of 5 per cent and 18 per cent, placing most common-use products in the lower slab. The move is expected to stimulate demand in the consumer appliances sector, particularly for room air-conditioners.
