AGORA Project Launched By UNDP to Promote Sustainable Cooling in Ghana and Nigeria
Nigeria: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and UNEP United for Efficiency, in collaboration with the governments of Ghana and Nigeria, have launched the AGORA (Abating Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Obsolete RAC Equipment in Ghana and Nigeria) project to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from outdated refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) equipment. The French Facility for Global Environment, with funding of EUR 2.4 million, will implement the project from 2024 to 2027. It focuses on promoting energy-efficient appliances using refrigerants with low global warming potential, such as R290-based air conditioners. Key objectives include strengthening policies and regulations, replacing outdated RAC equipment with efficient alternatives, and developing financial instruments to ensure sustainable adoption of new technologies. The project builds on initiatives like the National Cooling Action Plans of Ghana and Nigeria and aligns with international agreements, including the Kigali Amendment of the Montreal Protocol.
