Vietnam Reviews Air Conditioner Energy Standards to Improve Efficiency

Vietnam: Vietnam has initiated consultations to revise TCVN 7830, the national standard for the energy performance of non-ducted air conditioners. The discussions, organised by the Vietnam National Standards and Quality Institute in collaboration with GIZ Proklima, were held in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and involved government bodies, academic institutions, industry representatives and certification organisations. The consultations covered updates to Minimum Energy Performance Standards, market trends and the potential impact of stricter efficiency requirements, alongside inputs from regional experiences in implementing such standards.
Data cited during the consultations indicated that air conditioners account for between 30% and 60% of household electricity consumption in Vietnam. The country has committed to improving the efficiency of cooling equipment by around 50% by 2030 compared with 2022 levels, in line with the Global Cooling Pledge, while ASEAN countries aim to achieve a Minimum Energy Performance level of 6.09 by 2030. Feedback from stakeholders will be incorporated into the revised draft of TCVN 7830, which is expected to be finalised and released later in 2026.
