VASO by Eco Develops Recycled Glass Heat Pump

UK: VASO by Eco, a composite innovation business based in southern Scotland, is developing a pioneering air source heat pump base made from recycled glass to transform installations in urban areas. The company’s composite material provides an alternative to concrete, offering better thermal insulation, vibration absorption, and resistance to cracking, while reducing carbon emissions and installation time. This week, VASO by Eco began collaborating with the Centre for Net Zero High Density Buildings (CeNZ-HighDB), led by the University of Edinburgh, to enhance and refine the product with the aim of fast-tracking heat pump installations. The UK government targets 600,000 heat pump installations per year by 2028 as part of its broader strategy to decarbonize heating and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

The VASO by Eco Heat Pump Base Panel contributes to affordable, low-energy, low-carbon homes and is designed to improve efficiency, reduce noise and wear, and extend the lifespan of heat pumps. The innovation is being developed at Eco Group’s HQ in Annan, Dumfries and Galloway, and is intended to enable global volume installations. CeNZ-HighDB, a UKRI-funded research center, collaborates with multiple universities and BE-ST, Scotland’s national innovation centre for construction. With 55% of the world’s population currently living in urban areas, expected to rise to 68% by 2050, such solutions are critical for high-density buildings. VASO by Eco was recently shortlisted for a Circular Economy Award in BE-ST’s Accelerate to Zero Awards 2025, recognising its contribution to decarbonization and the circular economy in the built environment.
