Vancouver City Council Approves New Efficiency Standards for Water Heaters

Vancouver City Council adopts new standards for water heaters.

Canada: On June 11, 2024, the Vancouver City Council approved updates to efficiency standards for replacement water heaters, aiming to reduce emissions and potentially save residents money over time.

Effective February 28, 2025, any major home renovation exceeding USD 150,000 will require the installation of higher efficiency water heaters. Beginning January 1, 2027, all replacement water heaters in detached homes and duplexes must meet the highest efficiency standards.

The new regulations accommodate various types of equipment, including gas heat pumps, hybrid heat pumps, electric heat pumps, and electric resistance water heaters, ensuring residents can choose options that best suit their needs and preferences.

Switching to higher efficiency equipment during replacements or major renovations minimizes costs and maximizes benefits. Exceptions will be available for households with space or electrical capacity constraints, ensuring flexibility and support for all residents.
