USA: Heat pump sales in the US have increased over the past 15 years and now exceed shipments of fossil fuel furnaces, according to an analysis by the Building Decarbonization Coalition. In the first quarter of 2026, heat pump shipments were 32% higher than fossil fuel furnace shipments and were close to the level of air-conditioning unit shipments. In new housing, heat pumps accounted for 46% of installations in 2024, compared with 47% for forced-air furnaces, including natural gas and electric resistance systems.

Kevin Carbonnier, associate director of analytics at the Building Decarbonization Coalition, said: “It's not just that heat pumps are better, more comfortable, more efficient than furnaces. But also, you get the two-in-one appliance.” Heat pumps can provide heating during winter and cooling during summer, while generally using less energy than electric resistance heating systems. The report also noted that heat pumps do not burn fossil fuels inside homes and can reduce emissions as electricity generation incorporates more renewable energy.
