India: Urban Company is in initial discussions with component suppliers to locally assemble and sell room air conditioners under its in-house brand, Native. The move would expand the Gurgaon-based platform’s hardware portfolio, which currently includes water purifiers and smart locks. The initiative aims to integrate hardware sales with the company’s service network, leveraging its existing base of appliance repair technicians and diagnostic tools. The company has also introduced a “device co-pilot” feature to assist technicians in identifying AC faults, potentially complementing its entry into AC manufacturing.
India’s room air conditioner market, estimated at 13–15 million units annually, has gained momentum following the government’s Goods and Services Tax reduction from 28 per cent to 18 per cent, which led to lower prices and stronger festive-season demand. Urban Company’s management views this policy change, along with rising replacement demand, as favourable conditions for expanding into the category. The Native division, launched in 2023, recorded revenue of INR 1.16 billion (USD 13.9 million / EUR 12.8 million) in FY25, about four times higher than the previous year. The company, which recently listed on the stock exchange, reported operating revenue of INR 11.44 billion (USD 136.6 million / EUR 125.6 million) and a net profit of INR 2.4 billion (USD 28.7 million / EUR 26.4 million) for FY25.
