Heat Pump Association Outlines Roadmap To Accelerate Low-Carbon Heat Networks

UK: Britain's goal of meeting around 20% of its heating demand through low-carbon heat networks by 2050 could be at risk without stronger government support, according to a new report from the Heat Pump Association (HPA).
The association is urging the government to introduce clearer regulations, targeted funding mechanisms and greater policy recognition for heat pump-led heat networks, arguing that the current regulatory and financial framework is insufficient to drive large-scale deployment.
Heat networks, which distribute heat from a central source to multiple buildings, currently account for approximately 3% of the UK's heating demand. Achieving the government's 2050 target would require a substantial expansion of the sector, with network capacity increasing by nearly seven times.
The report highlights the role of shared ground loops, ambient heat networks and the drilling infrastructure that underpins many of these systems, alongside traditional district heating networks, as key technologies for accelerating the transition to low-carbon heating.
