Thailand Drives Green Cooling Innovation to Advance Sustainable Refrigeration Technologies
THAILAND: Thailand is a key player in the global refrigeration industry, recognized as one of the world’s leading exporters of components and related products. However, synthetic refrigerants such as Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) have raised concerns due to their harmful impact on the ozone layer, high global warming potential, and contribution to climate change.
To address these challenges, efforts are being made to promote a transition toward green cooling technologies and natural refrigerants, such as Hydrocarbons (HCs), which are both energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.
In March 2021, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) launched the EGAT Cooling Innovation Fund (CIF). Supported by excess funds from the Thailand Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (RAC NAMA) project—backed by the UK and German governments—the CIF aims to advance green cooling technologies. Over the past three years, the fund has allocated more than 190 million baht to various initiatives, fostering the growth of a green cooling innovation network.
Among its contributions, the CIF has supported the Electrical and Electronics Institute (EEI) in upgrading laboratory equipment to evaluate the safety and energy efficiency of refrigerators using natural refrigerants. Key outcomes include improved vaccine storage unit performance, certification of natural refrigerant-based products, and the promotion of proper disposal methods for air conditioners and refrigerants. These efforts aim to enhance hazardous waste management, reduce environmental impacts, and support sustainable electronic waste practices in Thailand.
