Spain’s Heating Market Shifts Towards Heat Pumps

Spain: Property owners in Spain are increasingly evaluating heat pump installations as the European Union moves forward with plans to phase out fossil fuel-based heating systems under the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. Spain is expected to progressively end new gas heating installations from 2025, with a targeted deadline of 2029. While existing gas boilers can continue operating, replacement options will become more limited over time. The transition is also influencing property valuations, with Energy Performance Certificates increasingly favouring lower-emission heating systems. Heat pumps are emerging as a key alternative, particularly in regions such as the Costa del Sol, where mild winter temperatures support efficient operation for both heating and cooling applications.

Industry sources report growing interest in heat pump systems among homeowners and property investors, particularly those replacing ageing gas or oil-fired heating equipment. Installation costs for residential heat pump systems are typically higher than those of conventional gas boilers, but the technology offers lower energy consumption due to its ability to transfer rather than generate heat. The broader shift is being driven by regulatory changes, energy efficiency considerations and efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Local HVAC contractors in Spain have reported increased enquiries over the past 18 months as property owners assess long-term heating options ahead of the upcoming regulatory deadlines.
