India: Japanese electronics major Sharp Corporation has exits India after selling its 75% stake in Sharp India to Pune-based Smart Services for INR 19.46 crore (USD 2.03 million), ending the company’s direct presence in the country after nearly four decades. Sharp entered India in 1985 through its manufacturing arm and later partnered locally to manufacture televisions and air conditioners. Over the years, the company expanded into consumer electronics, commercial systems and R&D operations, including the establishment of SHARP Software Development India Pvt Ltd in Bengaluru in 1999 and Sharp Business Systems India in 2000.
Sharp entered India’s mobile handset market in 2010 but later faced growing competition and weak demand, leading to the shutdown. In March 2026, Sharp Business Systems India announced a partnership with local OEMs to manufacture 500,000 air conditioners over three years. In its later years, Sharp’s advertising campaigns in India also shifted from technology-focused messaging to emotional and relationship-driven storytelling.
