San Francisco Introduces Initiative to Replace Gas Appliances for Electric Water Heaters
USA: San Francisco is rolling out a program that provides free electric hot water heaters for low-income residents as part of the city's broader effort to phase out gas appliances and reduce its net carbon emissions to zero by 2040. The program leverages existing incentives totaling up to USD 10,785 to completely cover the cost of replacing aging gas-fired water heaters.
However, convincing people to participate in the program is proving challenging, as many residents are still unaware of it or are hesitant to switch from gas appliances. The city's outreach workers are working to spread the word about the program and the benefits of electrifying homes, such as induction stoves, heat pumps, and electric water heaters. The city is also offering rebates that can add up to more than USD 10,000, covering both the purchase and installation of hot water heaters.
