Italy: Gas prices in Europe have increased following geopolitical tensions linked to the conflict involving Iran, raising concerns among ceramic manufacturers in Italy. According to Confindustria Ceramica, gas prices rose from EUR 33 per MWh (USD 36 per MWh) to EUR 55 per MWh (USD 60 per MWh) within two days, reaching the highest level since February of the previous year. The association estimated that the increase could result in additional annual costs of around EUR 180 million (USD 196 million) for the sector and indicated that higher gas prices are also expected to raise electricity costs.
Confindustria Ceramica called for measures to address price volatility in the European gas market and highlighted the need for more predictable energy costs for industrial companies. The association referred to the Energy Bill Decree currently under conversion into law, which includes measures aimed at limiting rising energy costs. It also proposed mechanisms such as allocating part of domestic gas production to energy-intensive industries to reduce exposure to fluctuations in international gas prices.
