USA: As temperatures rise across the United States, air conditioning usage is expected to increase significantly. HVAC companies are preparing for high demand during the summer months, but many face a shortage of the newly mandated refrigerant, R-454B. This refrigerant, required from January 2025 under a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulation, was introduced to lower global warming potential and improve safety. However, supply issues linked to international tariffs and container shortages have created complications for contractors and increased costs for homeowners.Â
The price of R-454B has risen substantially, with a single cylinder now costing several hundred dollars more than previous refrigerants. Some HVAC providers anticipated the shift and secured inventory, but others are now struggling to meet demand. Businesses report that the shortage, combined with the rising cost of air conditioning systems—averaging USD 10,000 (EUR 9,200)—could significantly affect operations and customer expenses if supply constraints persist. Existing air conditioning units that still function do not need to be replaced immediately, allowing homeowners to delay adopting the new refrigerant until necessary.
