Proposed Rules to Require Energy Labels for Air Conditioner Installations

European Union: The European Commission has proposed new legislation that would require installers of air conditioners, boilers and kitchen appliances to provide customers with the energy performance label of products when issuing installation quotations. The proposal aims to improve consumer awareness of energy efficiency and help households make informed purchasing decisions that could reduce long-term energy costs. The proposed rules come as demand for air conditioning increases across Europe during a period of record-high temperatures and more frequent heatwaves.

Under the proposal, customers purchasing appliances through installers would receive the same energy efficiency information available in retail outlets, addressing a gap where buyers often have limited access to product specifications before making a purchase. The proposed legislation will now be negotiated by EU member states and the European Parliament, a process expected to take around one year. The proposal also comes as retailers in countries including France and Spain report increased sales of air conditioning systems amid rising temperatures across the region.
