Ottawa Plans to Phase Out Oil Furnaces, Promote Heat Pumps
Ottawa: The federal government of Canada has announced a plan to phase out oil-fired furnaces in new construction and encourage the switch to heat pumps as part of the Canada Green Buildings Strategy. Energy Minister Jonathan Wilkinson emphasized the high cost and pollution of heating oil, stating, "Heating oil is enormously expensive, and it is the most polluting fuel that we use to heat our homes." The strategy aims to ban oil heating systemsa in new builds by 2028 and promote heat pumps, which are more efficient and environmentally friendly. Affordability programs are in place to help homeowners with the transition. Environmental groups have criticized the plan for not addressing other fossil fuel heating sources, while the Canadian Gas Association highlighted concerns about the reliability and cost of heat pumps.
